College Hockey Mid-America Teams Selected in 2007-2008 Final ACHA Division 1 Rankings
College Hockey Mid-America was well represented in the ACHA Division 1 Final Rankings. West Virginia, the regular
season league champion, led the pack at #14 in the nation. The team earned a berth to the Division 1 national tournament and fought valiantly,
but lost 2-0 to Penn State. West Virginia won all 14 regular season league games and its first playoff game only to lose to Washington and
Jefferson College (W&J) in the league championship. W&J was rewarded for its playoff championship and 22-12-1 Division 1 record with a
#18 ranking. Not far behind were Slippery Rock at #20 and Pitt at #24. Duquesne just missed finishing in the final rankings as it received several
votes. The remaining league members, IUP, John Carroll, and Youngstown State were also very competitive and College Hockey Mid-America
is poised to be one of the top Division 1 leagues in 2008-2009.

Washington and Jefferson CHMA Champions!
Congratulations to Washington & Jefferson College on winning the 2007-2008
College Hockey Mid-America Playoff Championship. In a hard fought battle,
W&J bested the undefeated regular season champion, West Virginia
University, by a 5-3 score on Sunday afternoon. W&J pounced on West
Virginia early and took a commanding 3-0 lead with 2:24 remaining in the
first period. West Virginia did not give up as it came on strong in the
second and third periods to cut the deficit to 4-3 with a goal at 5:12
remaining in regulation. However, it was too little, too late for West
Virginia as W&J sealed the deal with an empty net goal.
W&J's Craig Frey and West Virginia's J.L. Feeley were named Tournament
Co-MVP's and were awarded composite sticks courtesy of Sher-Wood Hockey.
Frey contributed 4 points in W&J's 7-5 semi-final victory over Duquesne
University and scored a goal and an assist in the championship game on
Sunday. In addition, Frey was recognized for his tenacious work and solid
two-way play. Feeley was named co-MVP as he scored 2 goals and an assist
in West Virginia's losing effort on Sunday in addition to a hat trick and
an assist in a 7-3 victory over Slippery Rock in the semi-final round.
Rounding out the weekend was a nail biting overtime 5-4 win for Slippery
Rock over Pitt. Pitt led the game 4-3 until Slippery Rock pulled its
goaltender for an extra attacker and tied up the game with a goal from
Derek Rusbarsky at 1:00 remaining in regulation. Matt Lancaster then
buried the game winner 50 seconds into overtime. The other game in the
preliminary round saw Duquesne pounding on IUP 10-3. However, the score
doesn't tell the whole story as it was a tight 3-2 game going into the
third period.
Other notable individual performances on the weekend for champion W&J
included Ryne Savisky with 5 points on the weekend, Clint Lang with 3
points in the championship game, Brian Doak with a clutch game winning
break away goal versus Duquesne, and solid goaltending from Jon
Mioduszewski as he saved 58 of 63 shots on goal.
Not to be lost are Duquesne's Mike Heath and Holt Hair with 7 points a
piece against IUP and W&J, and Slippery Rock's Wes Waldschmidt with 4
points versus Pitt and West Virginia. Many other players put together
strong performances and they will be recognized with an upcoming
announcement of the All College Hockey Mid-America Team.
Thank you to the Ice Zone, Youngstown State Ice Hockey, and Rocky Russo for
hosting an excellent playoff tournament. Good luck to West Virginia at the
ACHA Division 1 National Tournament.

West Virginia Clinches Regular Season Championship; Four CHMA Teams Ranked Heading Into Winter Break
Four College Hockey Mid-America teams are nationally ranked in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association
(ACHA) Division 1 coaches' poll. West Virginia leads the pack with a #13 ranking. Most impressively, West Virginia has dominated league play with
an 11-0 record and has already clinched the College Hockey Mid-America regular season championship. By capturing the regular season crown,
West Virginia has been granted an automatic bid to the ACHA Division 1 National Tournament which will be held March 1-5, 2008 at the ESL
Sports Centre in Rochester, NY.
The other nationally ranked teams in ACHA Division 1 are W&J (#18), Slippery Rock (#20), and Duquesne (#24). Pitt just missed making the Top
25 and John Carroll received some votes as well. IUP and Youngstown State have also received votes earlier this season. The top 16 teams nationally,
including the league autobid winners, will be invited to the ACHA Division 1 National Tournament. Competition is expected to be fierce as several
College Hockey-Mid America teams are on the bubble. CHMA playoff spots are also on the line as only the top 6 teams are invited to the league
tournament which will be held February 22-24 at the Ice Zone in Boardman, Ohio.
